Description
Description
The QSC Torque Lock Conversion is a specialized internal re-engineering of the Can-Am Defender’s primary clutch. While standard clutch kits are limited by the factory geometry, the Torque Lock system replaces the most critical internal component—the spider—to fundamentally change how the clutch shifts.
By replacing the OEM part with a custom billet spider, QSC has relocated the roller positions. This mechanical change allows for a "taller" shift weight design that is physically impossible to run with a stock spider, resulting in a dramatic increase in belt-clinching force.
Performance & Mechanical Engineering
The primary goal of the Torque Lock Conversion is to eliminate the "lazy" initial engagement common in utility-focused UTVs:
-
Enhanced Belt Squeeze: The taller weight profile provides significantly more "pinch" on the belt at low RPMs (off-idle), which prevents slipping and premature belt wear under heavy loads.
-
Superior Acceleration: Because the belt is held tighter, more power is transferred directly to the wheels throughout the entire shift curve, making the machine feel much more responsive and "snappy."
-
Billet Strength: The new spider is CNC-machined from high-grade billet aluminum, offering far more structural integrity than the factory cast-aluminum piece, especially in high-torque or high-heat environments.
Installation & Calibration
This conversion is designed as a direct internal replacement, avoiding the high cost of a completely new billet primary clutch assembly.
-
Primary Disassembly: Simply remove the factory spider and shift weights from your existing primary clutch.
-
Conversion: Install the QSC Billet Spider and the included set of adjustable shift weights.
-
Pre-Calibrated: QSC ships these kits with the shift weights pre-configured for your specific vehicle setup, ensuring a "bolt-in" experience that works right out of the box.
Why Choose the Torque Lock over a Standard Kit?
| Feature | QSC Torque Lock Conversion | Standard "Spring & Weight" Kit |
| Spider Type | Custom Billet (Relocated Rollers) | Factory Cast (Fixed Position) |
| Weight Geometry | Taller, High-Leverage Profile | Restricted to OEM Dimensions |
| Belt Grip | Maximum / High-Force | Standard / Improved |
| Cost | Mid-Tier (High Value) | Lowest Cost |
Technical Note: Because the spider rollers have been repositioned, this system requires the use of the QSC-specific shift weights provided in the kit. OEM weights will not function correctly with the modified roller indexing.
Pro Tip: This setup is the "gold standard" for Defenders running larger-than-stock tires (30"+) or those used for heavy towing and mud riding, where maintaining belt tension is the difference between finishing the day and smoking a belt.
