Description
Description
The QSC Torque Lock Conversion is a precision-engineered primary clutch internal upgrade designed specifically for the Can-Am Defender XMR. While standard clutch kits typically only swap springs and weights, the Torque Lock system re-engineers the mechanical geometry of the primary clutch.
By replacing the factory spider with a custom billet spider, QSC has relocated the roller positions to accommodate a taller, more aggressive shift weight design. This results in superior belt squeeze at low RPMs and a dramatic improvement in acceleration across the entire powerband.
Performance & Mechanical Engineering
The core advantage of the Torque Lock Conversion is the optimized shift curve. Moving the spider rollers allows for a shift weight profile that is physically impossible to run with the OEM spider.
-
Off-Idle Belt Squeeze: Significantly reduces belt slip during initial take-off, which is critical for the heavy loads and oversized tires typically found on XMR models.
-
Acceleration: The taller weight design maintains a more consistent "pinch" on the belt, providing a "hit" that feels more like a complete billet primary clutch at a fraction of the cost.
-
Billet Durability: The new spider is CNC-machined from high-strength billet aluminum to withstand the increased torque of tuned or hard-worked Defenders.
Kit Configurations & Compatibility
The components included in your kit depend on the model year of your Defender XMR:
| Model Year | Included Components |
| 2019–2025 Defender XMR | Billet Spider, Custom Helix, Secondary Spring, & Adjustable Shift Weights |
| 2016–2018 Defender XMR | Billet Spider & Adjustable Shift Weights |
Installation Overview
The conversion is designed to be a straightforward "bolt-in" process for technicians or experienced DIY owners:
-
Primary Clutch: Remove the factory spider and weights. Install the QSC Billet Spider and the pre-calibrated adjustable shift weights.
-
Secondary Clutch (2019+): Swap the factory helix and spring for the QSC-specific performance components.
-
Calibration: Weights arrive pre-calibrated based on your vehicle's tire size and typical riding environment.
Features at a Glance
-
Cost-Effective Power: Delivers the performance feel of a full billet primary without the $2,000+ price tag.
-
Adjustability: Features a full set of adjustable shift weights, allowing you to fine-tune your RPMs if you change tire sizes or add power upgrades (like an EVP Tune) in the future.
-
Precision Machined: Hand-assembled and engineered in the USA specifically for the Defender's work/play duty cycle.
Technical Note: Because the spider rollers are repositioned, this kit must be used with the supplied QSC shift weights. Attempting to use OEM weights with the QSC spider will result in improper shift geometry and potential clutch damage.
Pro Tip: While the primary clutch is disassembled for the spider swap, this is the ideal time to inspect your one-way bearing and brass washers for wear. Ensuring these small components are in top shape will maximize the smoothness of your new Torque Lock setup.
